Lazer's Kid Helmet Booklet
Client: Lazer | Agency: Anthem Branding | Conceptual Art
Lazer, a manufacturing company of bike helmets, came to Anthem looking to create a playful booklet that outlines how to use and fit children's helmets. The guideline provides helpful tips for parents and fun illustrations to engage kids.
Booklet layout
The booklet design needed to be informative and help parents understand the different safety components of helmets, along with including Lazer’s helmet buying options. The guide also needed to engage kids, thus we developed a fun illustrated scene. Featuring animals biking reinforced the importance of safe biking practices. Adding small details, such as the dog playing banjo and the glasses of the elephant added quirky and relatable elements.
Interactive sticker sheet
The client wanted to add a fun, interactive component to the sticker sheet. My solution was to include additional helmets for kids to place on the animals. Directional arrows help to navigate which helmets fit appropriately on each animal.
Developing the style
We provided the client with potential design options for the illustrated scene, such as the characteristics of the animals and scenery ideas. This allowed us to focus in on details of the illustration and stay on the same page with the client. Once we had some buzz words to work off of, a focused moodboard and sketch of the design was presented. In this visual direction, playful animals take on organic shapes. A hand drawn edge and texture adds personality and dimension to the quirky characters and park scene. While there is more opportunity for detail, the overall aesthetic is still simple and minimal.
Character development
I wanted to ensure that the animals had enough details to add visual interest and personality, while keeping in mind the overall aesthetic should be simple. Scuffy, fur details added dimension and depth to the animals. Unique eye and mouth shapes gave expression to the characters, such as content or excited.
The characters exemplify healthy and fun habits for kids, such as the dog playing banjo encourages creativity and the rabbit carrying carrots encourages healthy eating habits. Being kind to all was an important message too, shown with the elephant helping the meerkat putting on his helmet and the panda giving the sloth a ride.
